There are three major credit reporting companies in the United States. Their names are Experian, Trans Union and Equifax.

These companies get information about you from various sources including banks, credit card companies, department stores, courthouse records and other sources. They then create a credit file on you and sell that information to others at a huge profit.

The worst thing is they don't ask you if they can use this information, they don't get your permission to sell it and they don't even tell you what they are reporting about you until you ask and even then it's often hard to get your reports. And sadly, statistics show as many as 30% to 90% of all credit reports contain negative information that should not even be on the reports in the first place!

The credit reporting companies are not government agencies but private companies out to make a profit and they make their profit from your credit information. There is no law that says that these businesses even have to create a credit report on you but there are laws that protect you regarding the information they report. Unfortunately, the average consumer isn't familiar with these laws so he or she is unable to effectively demand the credit companies to only report accurate and complete information on their credit reports. Many consumers do not realize many credit reporting issues can be resolved with the source of the problem, creditors and/or debt collectors.

You should take advantage of the opportunity to control what is on your credit reports and not continue to allow the credit reporting companies, creditors and debt collectors to solely dictate what information appears on your reports. There are three sides to credit reporting, the credit reporting companies, the creditors/debt collectors, and most importantly, you! You need not be afraid of the credit reporting system. You must get involved! We can help ensure you have a maximally accurate and positive credit report. Many negative credit reporting issues are resolved with the source of the problem, creditors and/or debt collectors.
